ABOUT THE HOST

EXPERIENCE GOD
Scripture tells us that through the Holy Spirit the Word is, “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12), God speaking directly to me, similar to an intimate relationship, where there are times of speaking and times of listening. Yet often times when reading the Bible, I would not approach it in this way. My approach was to understand it, to be able to use it to help others, or to defend my beliefs. I would read several chapters at a time and often would be on the One Year Bible plan. Understanding its context and meaning is important and one way to approach Scripture. I had come to a point where my discipline of reading for information was not creating a deeper relationship and I was not genuinely experiencing God’s love. This led me to discover Lectio Divina, (divine or sacred reading).

WHAT IS LECTIO DIVINA?
Christians have been practicing Lectio Divina for 1,500 years. It was designed to cultivate a slower, more reflective reading of Scripture, a devotional approach. Think about a letter you receive from a special friend or lover, you can’t wait to open it, you savor every word, and it is personal and intimate; words just for you. This is the heart of practicing Lectio Divina! It forces you to get out of your head and tap into your heart, your emotions, and to stop and listen to what God has to say to you, paying attention to the deeper layers of your soul which are often hiding and need to be surrendered to God where you will receive grace and love. This can be scary at first, which was my experience. I was not really in touch with my deeper feelings and motives, and wondered: will God meet me as things begin to surface? My desire for Him to change me in the deepest places propelled me to move forward, to be open and make myself available through the practice of Lectio Divina.

WHY THIS PODCAST?
The things that have been the hardest in cultivating my relationship with God are consistency and listening. As I fall more in love with Him, the desire has become greater, but this has not always been the case. Let’s face it: the world glorifies busyness and that is where most people receive their value. It is hard to stop, to be still, and hear from God. We have to learn and give ourselves time, to listen to God’s still small voice, notice the nudges within and learn to respond with openness and vulnerability. I am hoping this podcast can get you started in developing a weekly rhythm of practicing Lectio Divina, saying, “‘What is on God’s heart for me today?’ or ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” (1 Samuel 3:10)

THE PROCESS
You will want to be in a place where you can listen without distraction and be present to God’s voice and your own. Remember it is an intimate conversation between you and God, and you want to be in a place that you can respond not just with intellect but with your heart and soul. Before we begin, we will have a time of silence to prepare, and become present to ourselves and to God. The practice consists of 4 steps: Lectio (reading), Meditatio (meditation), Oratio (prayer/response), Contemplatio (contemplation/surrender/waiting). Before each step, you will hear the chosen reading for the day and be prompted after with different questions, followed by a time of silence. Some of the steps you will just listen, visualizing the truth and asking yourself, “What would it look like or feel like to believe the words?” and other steps you will pray. Remember it might be hard at first, as most of us are not used to interacting with Scripture in this way, but give yourself grace, when learning something new it always takes time and practice.

I pray that as you meet His heart of love you will be transformed by it and reflect that love back to others. (Ephesians 3:14-19)
